Miss NMD Foundation, Inc.

The Miss Northern Marianas Descent Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the culture, heritage, and history of the Chamorro and Carolinian people of the Northern Mariana Islands. Our mission is to ensure that traditional knowledge, practices, and artistry are actively passed to future generations. This movement grew from the Miss Northern Marianas Descent Beauty Pageant, which serves as a platform to immerse contestants in hands-on traditional learning experiences. Participants engage directly with indigenous skills and creativity, culminating in onstage presentations that feature botanical and marine-inspired costumes rooted in Chamorro and Carolinian design. Through education, engagement, and public celebration, the Foundation fosters cultural pride, understanding, and continuity within the community.

Purpose

The purpose of the Miss Northern Marianas Descent Foundation, Inc. is to:

  • Preserve the cultural identity of Chamorro and Carolinian communities through education and practice.

  • Provide opportunities for youth and adults to actively learn and apply traditional skills.

  • Promote the visibility and appreciation of local artistry and cultural knowledge in public and ceremonial platforms.

Objectives

  1. Education and Hands-On Learning: Offer workshops, classes, and mentorship programs to teach traditional Chamorro and Carolinian skills, including crafts, dance, music, and marine-based arts.

  2. Cultural Representation: Utilize platforms such as beauty pageants and community events to display traditional designs, costumes, and practices in creative and engaging ways.

  3. Community Engagement: Encourage active participation from all generations, creating a bridge between elders, youth, and the broader community to foster intergenerational learning.

  4. Documentation and Preservation: Record and archive cultural practices, oral histories, and artistry to safeguard them for future generations.
